(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, Representative Conor Lamb (PA-17) released the following statement after top national security officials briefed members of Congress on the killing of Qasem Soleimani and rising tensions with Iran:

"I commend our troops for their unmatched professionalism and lethality. They have reminded true enemies like Soleimani what we are capable of.

"We owe it to our troops to make policy that strengthens America now and in the future. My generation knows the cost of short-sightedness in Iraq. We defeated the Iraqi military quickly in 2003 but are still there today.

"The administration still will not explain why Soleimani suddenly was an ‘imminent' threat after multiple U.S. and Israeli administrations declined to kill him. Nonetheless, we know the following has resulted from the administration's policy in the Middle East. We now have 15,000 more American troops there than we did six months ago. Our mission to defeat ISIS has been slowed down by the need to defend from additional Iranian attacks. Iran is now closer to developing a nuclear weapon.

"The administration owes us an explanation of why, under their leadership, things in the Middle East are getting worse."
